How to identify a panic attack

Long time ago when I was a student in New York City I experienced some symptoms of what is known as a panic attack. It was in the 60's and I was a foreign student living by myself faraway from home where having lots of friends and relatives was the normal way of life in a small country such as the Dominican Republic.

New York City is a different world as most of you know. One is always surrounded by crowds , everyone is in a hurry, things are very expensive and is difficult to maintain a relationship with someone because most of the time that person is also an out of towner.

One day after so much pressure I began to feel really scared of people, cars, trains, and when I went to the movies looking for distraction the theater ceiling was going to fall on top of my head.

My heart was palpitating constantly and the palm of my hands were sweating most of the time. I was also very shy and could not communicate easily with people. I was also in the process of learning English and I felt that people were going to make fun of me for my funny pronuntiation.

I could no sleep very well at night because I had the feeling I was going to die in my sleep.

I was really feeling miserable and my graduation from high school was in peril.

Luckily I found an art teacher with whom to chat.. I used to paint and loved going to art exhibits . This was a break for me. In the process I made new friends and this helped to improve my self confidence in expressing myself. One of them introduce me to a famous doctor in New York who examined me from head to toes and did not find anything wrong with me physically speaking. He did prescribed some Librium for a while to control my anxiety.

A few weeks later I was taking control of my life. I was able to sleep better, I had some good friends and my marks at school improved. I got my high school diploma with high marks in English. Wow !

Well I think loneliness plays a crucial role in affecting our mind generating anxiety and stress made even worse by the present pressures of our modern world. It's important to find withing ourselves how to control these destructive feelings and channel them to higher and more constructive purposes.

Please read now about how to know if you are under a panic attack.

A Panic attack  occurs  mainly because  our  body react defensively against  an  imagined or  real attack by  releasing,  hormones , accelerating  our heartbeats and  getting  us ready  to  fight  or  run.

"The intensity of the anxiety attack symptoms is incredible and explained by the swift reaction of the central nervous system to the imminence of danger. There is normally a trigger that unleashes the entire array of feelings and this could be a real-life situation or an internal psychological factor that is apparent or hidden to the sufferer himself/herself."

Please  realize that  panic  is a defense  mechanism to  help us  survive but  if  constant  panic attacks  prevents you  from carrying on  with  your day  to day activities  you  should  get  professional  help  counting with a real  arsenal of techniques  and  medicines  to make  your life worth living.
