Frank Sinatra at the Altos de Chavon's Amphitheater in 1982

Frank Sinatra inaugurated the Artist Village of Altos de Chavon, in La Romana, Dominican Republic in 1982 with an unforgettable show.

A dream comes true in Altos de Chavon

It was the year 1982 and Altos de Chavon the artist village located in la Romana, Dominican Republic withing the Casa de Campo Resort complex was inaugurated with a concert with The Voice: Frank Sinatra.

I was lucky to be there in the front seat and had an unforgettable experience of enjoying the Sinatra's performance.

The opening of the cultural center designed as a medieval town was the culmination of Charles G. Bluhdorn 's dream.

A couple of years before he had invited me for a ride to see the beautiful land where he planned to build an cultural center that would be the mecca for artists for all over the world.

He was a grandiloquent person for whom the word impossible did not exist in his vocabulary. His enthusiasm was contagious even for the skeptical ones.

So this night had a special meaning for all of us.Sinatra and Buddy Rich and his orchestra were here at the Altos de Chavon Roman style amphitheatre for the official inauguration.

Mr. Bluhdorn had wanted Paramount Pictures to record the concert so it could be shown all over the world. Viewers could see the magnificence of the artist village , the beauty of the landscapes, beaches and golf courses of Casa de Campo which were owned by G+W.

Harvard Business School had placed Mr. Bluhdorn among the top American Business Leaders according to this paragraph:

"From 1960 to 1965, Gulf and Western's growth was largely through expansion of its auto parts business. In 1965, Bluhdorn began to move toward diversification. He acquired such companies as New Jersey Zinc Company, Paramount Pictures, the South Puerto Rico Sugar Company and the Consolidated Cigar Corporation. By 1970, the company had become the 64th largest industrial corporation in America with annual sales of $1.6 billion, assets of over $4 billion and some 85,000 employees."

Charles Bluhdorn was born in 1926 and died in 1983 flying out of his beloved Romana.

It would give a full blast promotion to the Dominican Republic new tourist industry.

Frank Sinatra was perfect towards that end.

The concert was great, the ambiance fantastic. Buddy Rich put so much effort in his playing his drums that he ended up exhausted had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance after his performance.

Sinatra sang his standard songs : New Yokr, New York, My Way, the Lady is a Tramp. etc and made the fascinated audience laugh with his joke.

Sinatra was as charming as ever.

However Frank Sinatra did not know where he was.

Somewhere within his concert , believe it or not, he thanked the people of Brazil for its hospitality.

Frank Sinatra and his cool style

Frank Sinatra has been considered as an icon of American musical cool and he started his singing career as a rail-thin crooner during World War II, and much later on he evolved into what thousands of fans believe, as the most respected pop singer of his generation. He was a good actor, winning an Academy Award for his performance in From Here To Eternity (1953, with Burt Lancaster). He had special charisma:Along the way Sinatra developed a reputation as a well-dressed, fast-living, fist-fighting swinger, with a top-dog swagger that earned him the nickname "The Chairman of the Board."

I was a member of the video crew for this production, hired by Paramount. The concert was a highlight of my career. We're you also in attendance at the Heart/Santana concert the following night? The Santana portion was shortened by a thunderstorm.

I would like to purchase a copy of the concert by Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra.

Hey Alex congrats and I am really excited to hear that you were part of the video crew for that production. La Romana is my native city in the Dominican republic and that concert was in the opening of That theather a year later after I was born 1981. REally nice to hear you were over there involved in such a memorable concert.
